The term political left is sometimes used to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Traditionally a liberal was someone who believed in the rights of the individual. They wanted to reduce the impact of the Church or religious organizations without defying the conventions of the Constitution. They were usually associated with being the patriots of freedom and would appear, on paper at least, to be more tolerant and more generous.

The political right on the other hand would be used to describe someone who was more conservative in their outlook on life. If a hostile situation arose in the Middle East for example, while the political left would be willing to work with the United Nations and try to reach a peaceful compromise, the right would generally advocate an armed response especially if they thought the USA was at risk.

The political right was usually associated with being American patriots. Historically, the Republicans would have been seen to support the military and its veterans, although it is debatable whether that is still the case. They believed in an entrepreneurial spirit, after all this is the USA where anyone can become wealthy if they believe in their dreams. With the recent economic downturn, there are a lot of people who believe that those on the political right will support the capitalistic ideal at the expense of ordinary people’s pensions and stock holdings.

Whether you agree or disagree with either party, it is more than obvious that there are extreme viewpoints on both sides. For example some conservatives believe that every individual should be responsible for their own healthcare, schooling etc. After all if some can succeed why can’t everyone? They do not buy into the fact that some people just are not cut out to be entrepreneurs.

There are also problems on the political left which has been accused of stifling the American dream via its fiscal policy. Regardless of which side of the political arena you sit, one thing is certain. You will never be bored if you are studying, or involved in, politics.

Many people get online and get sucked into political forum debates, where one side rails against another. Then the name calling starts and degradation spirals out of control from there. Eventually people no longer use their real name or identity and then they are suddenly emboldened by the anonymity to say things they would never in a million years say in public.

The sound and fury is fun to participate in, yet having been involved in these things and then finding out I am debating with an anonymous poster who resorts to name calling is not so much fun. Indeed one has to ask them selves; are you sure you wish to beat your head against the wall, with others who disagree with you? I have noticed attacks on my personal and actual observations when the other debaters have failed to observe themselves and then basically spout party-line politics for issues they no nothing about.

Politics are more of a hobby for me, just something fun to think on, I never get too worked up over any of it. People just do not know what I know and have not seen all I have seen, so I understand that. And trying to convince someone with a closed mind of anything is a wasteful activity. You may find yourself in such debate online and you will remember what I have said. We must all agree that there are important issues we MUST address as a Nation because our security and on-going efforts to maintain our civilization and better it are at stake. There are serious topics we can all discuss online and we have come to far to throw it all away or backtrack now. Consider this in 2006.

I truly had blogging success and became a successful blogger within a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, if took me years to understand how I did it. I want to share my little blogging story with you, and then lay out an easy blueprint on how you can also building a blogging empire with thousands of faithful readers.

My adventure with blogging began around six years ago on MySpace. I started a political blog because I just loved to talk about politics with people. I read other political bloggers on the site, left comments regularly, and then told them about my new blog on the day that I launched it. My first writing was titled something like “Liberals Want To Destroy The United States!”, or something like that. Since all of the guys I had been following new that I was launching my own stories, they told all of their followers to come and check me out. What was the response to this initial writing? Unbelievable, to say the least!

On that first day I had more responses, arguments, and complete fun than any other blog I had ever read. I don’t really remember the numbers, but I had thousands of comments. People were flooding my in-box with messages of encouragement or threats. I was shocked at the reactions I got. On the second day I checked and I had the number one blog on MySpace, in the political section, on the previous day.

I waited a few days before I created my second writing. This time I chose something like “All Liberals Are Atheists”, or something to that effect. Again, many bloggers told their followers about mine, and the response was simply amazing. This one became the number one blog on MySpace as a whole. This means that no other blog on MySpace had as many people reading it as mine did. I was stunned at my almost instant blogging success. For a long time I had the number one spot there for the political section, and often for the whole site.

It took me years to understand what made all of this happen. I can now recreate this same effect over and over in other sites by following three steps:

1- Blog about a topic that incites the mob. Don’t talk about something that doesn’t enrage people like the weather, your golfing problems, or why your baby cries. Create some lightning!

2- Follow other bloggers and then genuinely ask them to help you when the time comes. Before I launch a new blog on say Obama fans, I start reading other Obama fan blogs. I leave a lot of comments. I become engaged with the writer. Then before my blog launches, I ask them for a plug.

3- Write as if you are talking to a friend. When I read a blog that seems as if a professor wrote it, I close the page quickly. Talk to your audience as if they are family and friends. Learn how to make them feel as if you are one of them.

Of course there are other tips to starting a blogging empire, but this is a great step. I wish you all of the blogging success in the world!

Online Political Debates and Forums sure get out of hand quickly, as the debates so often turn to personal attacks. Of course when this happens all is lost as the issues become clouded and the purpose of the debate is lost. Online debate forums therefore need a strong set of moderators and collaboration between the moderators with specific and pre-defined guidelines, which must be adhered to.

That sounds time consuming and it can be extremely challenging, so each moderator must be certain that they can perform? They need to ask themselves; what have they ever done in their life that makes them believe that they are up for it? It is a lot of work. Often it is advised to have third party verifiers and third party research to back it up.

If an online debater posts a comment then at the end of each paragraph or every couple they should put reference links to the supporting data, not allowing them to put them at the end after the reader forgets. As these political commentators write innuendo after innuendo and then at the end quote a “news” article as if any of that is real. I have been in the “news” all my life and never once had the reporter got the story exactly correct.

A moderator should check up on all the references and make sure they are valid, credible and support the comment. One also should ask; “Who is monitoring the monitors? Assuming they will be human? How can you trust them? People who are involved in Politics always have a motive and unless that motive is to better the country or providing for a safer and more efficient civilization then, well?

Ultimately one of the most important things is to keep such political forum or debate sites from becoming bitch sites. Or worse sounding boards for one side without consideration of an alternate point of view otherwise the debate is a wash in one-sided politics serving no free man. Additionally it is important to not jeopardize the integrity, articles, commentary or time of the debaters. This is why the monitoring of references and data in any and all online political debate forums is essential to the integrity of the website. We must consider all this in 2006.

Did you know that the term political left originated in France during the French revolution? After the King and Queen had been executed, France became a republic. The terms left and right arose from the seating in the new parliament. They are still used when discussing politics today although they are rather simplistic given our complex political landscape.

If you describe someone as being on the political left, that person is deemed to be more liberal in their views. A conservative would be described as being on the political right. Republicans who tend to be more conservative in their viewpoints are right wing whereas the Democrats are traditionally on the left side of the political arena.

As is often the case with human beings, it just isn’t that simple. Even within those who support the Democrats there will be some who will be extremely liberal in their thinking and what they consider best policy. For example you may have some Democrats who believe that abortion is wrong so would follow a typical right wing view on that issue. Or you may have other Liberals who believe that the war in Afghanistan is just and so spending on defense should increase whereas the Democrats usually advocate decreased spending on arms.

In politics, as with all other things, there are always the extremes. You can have two people who are both deemed to be liberals yet they hold radically different opinions on various issues. These different viewpoints are what make political meetings so interesting and the study of politics so absorbing not to mention complicated.

Barack Obama is a Democrat so would be described as being on the political left. Typically his party would support issues such as legalizing same sex marriages and allowing doctor assisted suicide. The conservatives would appear to take a more religious viewpoint being pro life, anti same sex marriages and wish to introduce more religion in schools.

It is usually a membership site set up to discuss different events, differing opinions and breaking news in the field of politics. The better forums are those that have no political bias i.e. they are not pro Democrat or Republican but have been set up with the intention of encouraging open and honest debate with participants holding various viewpoints.

The owner and moderators on the site should encourage exchange of opinions as this will make the website more popular and hence will attract more traffic and resulting members. But they must also moderate the forum correctly. While arguments are common when anyone discusses politics, it shouldn’t be an excuse for one member to abuse another. The moderator’s role in a political forum is to prevent the discussion descending into personal attacks. At the same time they do not want to cut off an interesting argument. It is not an easy task but most people can tell the difference between someone who is expressing a viewpoint and those that are just trying to be disruptive.

There is a reason why you probably shouldn’t discuss sex, religion or politics at a party. People tend to hold very strong opinions on the subject. Some people educate themselves about the various issues and come to political forums to discuss these arguments. They are willing to listen to what the other people think and will on occasion be convinced by the discussion to change their mind on that particular issue.

But you also have those people who have followed a certain party because that is what their family always voted. They may not completely understand why they are a Democrat or a Republican but they will defend the policies of the relevant party to the last. These people tend to start quoting the Constitutional right to freedom of speech when you try to argue the point. Sometimes it is pointless trying to get into a debate with them and the best thing is to walk away and find political forums populated with people who are more open minded.

There is plenty of choice online and the best political forums are those where you feel comfortable knowing you can express your views and can get involved in constructive arguments with your fellow members without being personally attacked. The forum will have an active membership with regular new posts and people available for discussion. There will be a number of new threads opened at least on a weekly basis. Politics is a fast moving field and nobody wants to belong to a forum, political or otherwise that nobody posts in.

When you join a new membership site always make sure you read the rules and obey them. Otherwise you could find your posts being deleted and in extreme cases you may be asked to leave. Have a read through the posts to see whether the threads become an interesting discussion or merely an argument – the online equivalent of a shouting match. Political forums are by definition somewhere that people will go to argue. So it is best not to be too sensitive about the replies one of your posts may get. However, if the person replying has launched a personal attack on you rather than entering into a constructive argument, you should not respond in kind. It is best to notify a moderator or the forum owner who should deal with the issue.

Politics covers such a diverse range of topics that it is possible to be a Democrat yet hold very different opinions on a certain issue to a fellow Democrat. Thankfully we live in a society that promotes freedom of speech and offers you a chance to discuss your opinion without fear of punishment. But sometimes people take liberties particularly in online political forums where they can register without revealing their true identity. They can hide behind their call handle and use the membership site as a way to vent extreme opinions. A well moderated forum will usually do their best to stamp out this type of behavior.

Many of the leaders in our society are guided by unhealthy
intentions. Instead of seeking to serve the people and heal
our nation’s ills, their actions and decisions are primarily
motivated by their desire for power. Many of the people
running our country are run by their addictions to approval,
sex, power and control. Unfortunately, few truly healthy
individuals want to submit themselves to the necessary
abuses inherent to our political races – the verbal abuse
both given and received, the huge amounts of money spent,
the integrity sacrificed through the concessions, lies and
manipulations offered in order to win.

Our system of
electing our officials is so corrupt that there is little
possibility of attracting a person with a strong, personally
responsible, loving inner adult self. This is not to say that
none of our elected representatives are honest and caring.
Some are certainly motivated by positive intentions but,
unfortunately, they constitute a minority.

There is no training required in personal responsibility to
run for office. Our leaders are not required to heal their
dysfunctional aspects in order to become honest and
trustworthy people. The prerequisites for political positions
mostly include having enough money, enough powerful
people behind the scenes, being male, and being white.

Our political arena is designed to attract wounded people who
need approval and power in order to feel worthy and validated.
Obviously, such a person, with little or no internally derived
sense of self-worth and integrity, is very susceptible to
corruption. As the adage says: “Power corrupts and absolute
power corrupts absolutely.” Power corrupts when a person
is motivated by his or her desire for power over others, and
few people have accomplished enough inner healing to
transcend the desire for control over others.

A healthy person in office who is more concerned with serving
the people than with getting re-elected could accomplish a
great deal. Such a person was depicted in the movie Dave.
In this film the actual president is in a coma and the White
House officials, seeking to conceal the truth from the public
so they can maintain control, put a look-alike into the
president’s seat. Dave, however, is a man of heart, and rather
than allowing himself to be controlled he sets about making
necessary changes – cutting money where it is not needed
and allocating it into more crucial avenues, like child care
and the creation of jobs. He even takes responsibility for the
corruption of the actual president and gracefully “dies” as
the actual president is dying so the vice-president, a man
of great integrity who was maligned by the power structure,
could take over in his rightful place. The movie is, of course,
a fantasy. Sadly, we would never elect a man of such
integrity – a straightforward, honest, caring, and financially
middle-class man like Dave. Our election process does
not allow for this.

Revamping our election process would give people like Dave an
opportunity to run for office. We desperately need people who
care more for the common good than for their own popularity.
We need brilliant, creative, honest and caring people to lead
our country, but this will never happen with our present election
system. We have incredible talent in this great country of ours,
talent that could eliminate hunger and homelessness, and heal
the internal wounds that create health problems, drug abuse,
racism, violence and crime. But this talent is rarely tapped
because running our country has been based on the earthly
values of greed and power over others rather than the spiritual
values of honesty, compassion and caring.

Unfortunately, neither our government nor most big businesses
are based on the spiritual principles of compassion and caring
about the common good. I have no doubt that if our government
was based on spiritual principles we would not have the hunger,
homelessness, crime, health problems, and drug abuse that are
endemic to our modern society.

The other day one of my friends heaved a sigh and said: “No, the art of politeness has long been dead…” I looked at him, very surprised. “Yes, it died with the turn of the century.” I thought it over, puzzled at the thought that politeness left this world 10 years ago. “You know, men do not tip their hats at women anymore,” he went on, looking very nostalgic. It dawned upon me that what he was thinking of was not this century, but the one that ended in the year of 1900 and his proof of the death of politeness was that men did not perform the ritualized tipping of the hat at women anymore.

To me politeness is something more, but then my sole experience of this special hat tipping is from Ireland several years back. However, I much prefer that people don’t push me when I am standing on line for the buss or that they do not jump the line in stores. That I see as politeness and I know full well what it is for: Politeness is to make us keep the peace and not fight over something like people jumping the line or pushing us accidentally. Also I like it when people of all sexes do not use lewd language all the time. It is tiresome and superfluous to my ears although I may do it too in heated arguments.

In Denmark we had a famous linguist and writer of household words, Peder Syv (: Peter Seven; 1631-1702), and one of his one liners reads like this: “Politeness does not cost anything”. He may be right, but sometimes it takes hunched shoulders and that costs, or so it seems when it comes to people of today. Many feel that they surrender or even demean themselves by being polite so they do not. On the contrary, they may be a pestilence by ignoring old people who need a helping hand and answer i a not too friendly voice if someone they do not want to associate with dare to talk to them.

Politeness does not come cheap to these people and they only offer it to their own circle, if even that. Something which is downright stupid as politeness is a law of nature. That is obvious when one observed all the rituals of animals. A wild animal which was raised by humans does not know these rituals and may be killed if it is replaced in nature.

Another famous, Danish writer, Emma Gad (1852-1920), made a living by publishing manuals in polite behaviour. Her “Takt og Tone – Hvordan vi omgs” (” “Etiquette – How We Associate With each Other”) is a classic and it is being sold even today. In this book she has listed a lot of rules for good behavious and politeness and some of them were detailed down to the comma and full stop. For instance she told that if one was 15 minutes late for an appointment one has to find a fresh and plausible explanation for this calamity. If one is 20 minutes late one may lose one’s seat at the table as the hostess now is free to give it to someone else. Should one be 25 minutes late it is considered more polite to stay away for ten minutes more so that the delay is 35 minutes. i fail to see why, but Emma Gad may be right even here.

All of this made me think of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” (1912) in which Professor Higgins sets out to turn the flower girl into a lady. When he succeeds her father accuses him of – as a side effect – having ruined his life by making him respectable: “… Ruined me. Destroyed my happiness. Tied me up and delivered into the hands of middle class morality.” In his case most of the “undoing” is done with money, but it her case it is mostly the language that makes the difference. To me that is rather shallow, but I agree that it may have been true and perhaps still is.

Ask the question, “what is Liberal education?” to students attending the university today, and one will find very few students who could answer this question with any sort of accuracy. One will hear such things as, “a Liberal education is a well rounded education,” or, “I don’t really know, I’m going to school to have a career.” This, without a doubt, is a serious situation for our culture and our country. We have descended so far down the path of narrow, narcissistic, specialization, that the meaning and purpose of Liberal education itself has become lost in the fog of the information age.

Purpose

The purpose of a true liberal education, to quote Strauss would be to “provide a ladder by which we try to ascend from mass democracy to democracy as originally meant.” Another way of putting “mass democracy” would be to say mass culture. To further quote Strauss, “it demands from us the complete break with the noise, the rush, the thoughtlessness, the cheapness of the Vanity Fair of the intellectuals as well as of their enemies. It demands from us the boldness implied in the resolve to regard the accepted views as mere opinions, or to regard the average opinions as extreme opinions which are at least as likely to be wrong as the most strange or the least popular opinions. Liberal education is liberation from vulgarity. The Greeks had a beautiful word for vulgarity; they called it apeirokalia, lack of experience in things beautiful. Liberal education supplies us with experience in things beautiful.”

Today’s Liberal education works to achieve the direct opposite of this. Today’s Liberal education seeks to create mass democracy by placing diversity above excellence. Today’s Liberalism seeks to create the city of pigs that others have endlessly labored to rise above.

Though not often spoken, Democracy has an inherent problem. If the masses that elect representatives are ignorant, decline and destruction soon follow. Liberal education provides the antidote to this potential problem. If the general population is composed of a significant number of people who have cultivated their minds, they will elect as representatives cultivated individuals. If the general population is composed of uneducated, illiterate people, then they will elect Post Modern Liberals to be their representatives. Since Liberalism, in its postmodern condition, is a mental disorder, these representatives will bring about the collapse of the society.

A quote from the introduction to the great books by Encyclopedia Britannica written in 1954;

“We believe that the reduction of the citizen to an object of propaganda, private and public, is one of the greatest dangers to democracy. A prevalent notion is that the great mass of the people cannot understand and cannot form an independent judgment upon the matter; they cannot be educated, in the since of developing their intellectual powers, but they can be bamboozled. The reiteration of slogans, the distortion of the news, the great storm of propaganda that beats upon the citizen twenty-four hours a day all his life long mean either that democracy must fall a prey to the loudest and most persistent propagandists or that the people must save themselves by strengthen their minds so that they can appraise the issues for themselves.”

Al Gore comes to mind with his loud global whining drum. Barak Obama comes to mind as well. He looks good, speaks well, therefore he’s our man. Whether he is qualified for the job is irrelevant. With the dawn of cable TV and the internet, the drums have grown to a deafening volume since 1954. What can a person do about this?

How To Receive A Liberal Education

If the purpose of a Liberal education is to create a mass aristocracy, how is this achieved? How does someone cultivate their minds and soul? I agree with Strauss when he says that one should continually have intercourse with the greatest minds. This poses a problem because few, if any teachers could be considered great minds. I also agree with Straus when he points out that one is extremely lucky if only one great mind is alive in one’s time. Sure, we have many professors that work in philosophy departments, but are they truly lovers of philosophy? As well, we have no shortages of professors working in history departments, but are they truly historians? No, by and large, as in all professions, greatness is a rarity.

It is for this reason one must look to the great books, written by the truly great minds, who have left us with their wisdom through their writing. Until recent times, one was not considered to be educated until he was well acquainted with the masterpieces of Western man. Oh how far we have strayed from this! We have intentionally silenced all those voices that call from the past, and in silencing these voices, we have also silenced all the wisdom that could be used to help man in the present.

The Great Books of the Western World can be purchased through the Encyclopedia Britannica. If you are seeking more than a job, if you want to cultivate your mind, I highly recommend getting a set of these books. I also recommend that you spend the rest of your life reading them. Read them with your children as early as eight years old. By the time they hit the university, they will be far more educated than the average professor, and therefore will not succumb to the insanity that is taught there. No matter what they choose to do, they will be more successful because of this. The answer to the problems created by Postmodern Liberalism is Classical Liberalism. This is the true meaning of Liberalism, where one cultivates their mind rather than corrupting it.

Conclusion

From all this, we can conclude that today’s institutions of higher learning are far more technical schools, designed to provide someone with a job in one field of specialization or another, rather than places where one is encouraged to cultivate those things that bring out the best within human nature. The goal of producing mass aristocracy has been replaced with propagating mass democracy, a city of pigs where diversity is valued over excellence, pathological equality through affirmative action over academic excellence through personal achievement and accountability. Today’s universities are places of indoctrination into a shallow worldview, where history and philosophy have been reduced to inconveniences that stand in the way of progress. One will have a hard time receiving a true Liberal education at today’s universities.

I have noticed a rampantly dominant theme coming through the comments left on my blog. Every liberal that has left a comment has put forth the proposition that the debates between left and right, and the debates between atheism and religion are unimportant, and that we should focus on real issues. This is a clear sign of decadence in our society. Aristotle said that man is a political animal, if not; he is either a god or a beast. There are no issues as real as left and right, God and man. To discard these topics is to discard what it is to be human.

That is precisely the outcome of Postmodern Liberalism. Postmodern Liberalism leads people down the path of de-humanization. Hitler de-humanized the mentally and physically handicapped because they were an inconvenience. Liberals in our time have de-humanized unborn fetuses for being an inconvenience. Abortion has become the new holy sacrament of the religion known as Liberalism. Liberalism with its embrace of scientific naturalism has de-humanized man, and has cast him down to equality with dolphins, great horned owls, and forest moss.

Only a true Liberal education for the common man can save us. A true liberal education is indeed possible, but you have to take responsibility and the time to educate yourself, and your children.
