The term political left is sometimes used to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Traditionally a liberal was someone who believed in the rights of the individual. They wanted to reduce the impact of the Church or religious organizations without defying the conventions of the Constitution. They were usually associated with being the patriots of freedom and would appear, on paper at least, to be more tolerant and more generous.

The political right on the other hand would be used to describe someone who was more conservative in their outlook on life. If a hostile situation arose in the Middle East for example, while the political left would be willing to work with the United Nations and try to reach a peaceful compromise, the right would generally advocate an armed response especially if they thought the USA was at risk.

The political right was usually associated with being American patriots. Historically, the Republicans would have been seen to support the military and its veterans, although it is debatable whether that is still the case. They believed in an entrepreneurial spirit, after all this is the USA where anyone can become wealthy if they believe in their dreams. With the recent economic downturn, there are a lot of people who believe that those on the political right will support the capitalistic ideal at the expense of ordinary people’s pensions and stock holdings.

Whether you agree or disagree with either party, it is more than obvious that there are extreme viewpoints on both sides. For example some conservatives believe that every individual should be responsible for their own healthcare, schooling etc. After all if some can succeed why can’t everyone? They do not buy into the fact that some people just are not cut out to be entrepreneurs.

There are also problems on the political left which has been accused of stifling the American dream via its fiscal policy. Regardless of which side of the political arena you sit, one thing is certain. You will never be bored if you are studying, or involved in, politics.

Did you know that the term political left originated in France during the French revolution? After the King and Queen had been executed, France became a republic. The terms left and right arose from the seating in the new parliament. They are still used when discussing politics today although they are rather simplistic given our complex political landscape.

If you describe someone as being on the political left, that person is deemed to be more liberal in their views. A conservative would be described as being on the political right. Republicans who tend to be more conservative in their viewpoints are right wing whereas the Democrats are traditionally on the left side of the political arena.

As is often the case with human beings, it just isn’t that simple. Even within those who support the Democrats there will be some who will be extremely liberal in their thinking and what they consider best policy. For example you may have some Democrats who believe that abortion is wrong so would follow a typical right wing view on that issue. Or you may have other Liberals who believe that the war in Afghanistan is just and so spending on defense should increase whereas the Democrats usually advocate decreased spending on arms.

In politics, as with all other things, there are always the extremes. You can have two people who are both deemed to be liberals yet they hold radically different opinions on various issues. These different viewpoints are what make political meetings so interesting and the study of politics so absorbing not to mention complicated.

Barack Obama is a Democrat so would be described as being on the political left. Typically his party would support issues such as legalizing same sex marriages and allowing doctor assisted suicide. The conservatives would appear to take a more religious viewpoint being pro life, anti same sex marriages and wish to introduce more religion in schools.

No matter what your political affiliation is, it probably isn’t represented by the mainstream media. By trying to please everyone, the media – like the political establishment it has come to serve – pleases no one. For most American people, until recently they just had to put up with this situation. Until the invention of political blogs, there was simply no good news analysis that did not try to tow a moderate party line. Thanks to politics blogs, however, that has all changed. No matter what ideological position you are coming from, you can find a political blog that is written for you.

I have been reading liberal political blogs for about three years now, and I feel like they have really enhanced my understanding of current events. We live in such a conservative society that much of the real news of what is going on is censored by the mainstream media. In these free political forums, however, the news can finally be heard by the public that is hungry for it. Unfortunately, political blogs don’t have the budget to do some of the things that the more mainstream news outlets do. They cannot have correspondents all over the world, for example, ready to report any event that happens. What they can do, however, is access a wide range of different media and try to put together a more complete picture than any single publication does. News analysis is a valuable service, and one that is completely neglected by the mainstream media. Thanks to political blogs, we can get beyond the the facile analysis provided by most of the news pundit shows.

But some blogs are not based on facts. So it will be your job to know which political blogs are based on proof or spoofs. Of course, the problem with personal blogs is that they do not have the same standards of proof as some of the media outlets do. While most political blogs are at least as dependable as Fox news, when they are compared to legitimate media outlets, many of them falls short. This is why you have to pick and choose carefully when you are reading blogs. Anyone can write anything they want on a political blog, and it is very hard for someone to call them on it. After all, free speech is a right, and posting on the Internet is simply an extension of that right. People have just as much right to blog political fiction as fact, and rumormongers abounds. As always, it is up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Political Forums and the Changing Face of Democracy

Unless you’ve been living the last decade under a very large and weighty rock, there’s no way you’ve failed to notice that in a thousand different ways, the internet has changed pretty much everything about the way we live, work, and communicate with each other.

The rise of political forums on the net has, and is continuing to change the face of, and in fact, the very nature of democracy itself.

Some of these changes are for good, and others for ill, but that fact that it’s happening is undeniable. We’ll take a look at a few of the ways things are changing, try to shed at least a ray of light on the subject of political forums in general, then invite you to participate in our own political forums, right here on the site.

On the plus side, the biggest gain that the ordinary citizen sees, courtesy of political forums he or she may frequent is that politics has become more accessible and more personal than it has been since the Greek Polis’ first experimented with the concept.

In those days of course, the immediacy, accessibility, and “personal-ness” of democracy stemmed from the fact that the city states tended to be relatively small, and the policy matters discussed often concerned matters of immediate survival for these relatively isolated political units (what neighboring city-states to ally with, which rivals to attack, matters of trade, military service, etc…all of these were much more transparent to, and bore a much more personal and immediate effect for the ancient Greeks than they do for us today, where many of these things exist in our minds only as abstract concepts).

All that to say that while there are some parallels between the political forums attended by the ancient Greeks, and the virtual political forums that the masses are flocking to today, there are also some fundamental differences.

It is all very well that politics in general are a lot more accessible to the common man now, than they ever were before, but unfortunately, this is (or can be) something of a two-edged sword, because a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Through the ages, political forums of all types have, of course, been center stage for all manner of pundits and egoists, looking to sway the masses for their own ends, and this is certainly as true today as it was in our ancient past. One key difference here though, is that while the political forums of yesteryear saw their members all drawn from a relatively homogenous (and rather smallish) population, today’s popular political forums are massive things, and cater to a large, ever-changing, incredibly diverse population of participants. This being the case, of course it naturally follows that there’s a much broader spectrum of political belief to be found within the confines of one of our modern political forum than would have even been conceivable in the forums of old, and this, coupled with the anonymity that our modern political forums provide (ancient democracy was very much an “in-your-face” affair) opens the door for a great deal of verbal viciousness.

This is not to say that our forefathers did not have their fair share of vile, mud-slinging debates. They most certainly did, but these tended to be the exceptions, rather than the rule (and this is the reason they stand out so colorfully against the backdrop of the greater bulk of those ancient political debates). Contrast that with conversations in today’s political forums, where the battle lines are drawn going in (typically along Conservative vs. Liberal lines), and the debates get heated almost from the outset, and more often than not, quickly degenerate into mindless mud-slinging, with no one really remembering what the original debate topic actually was.

The second major negative to be found in today’s political forums is the fact that demagogues have access to a vast population of easily convinced, easily led people. This has literally launched a number of careers, and has led to some unfortunate consequences, with popular talk show hosts essentially supplanting the elected political leadership when it comes to creating policy planks and talking points. This is a danger to guard against not because the cult personalities are inherently bad people…the author makes no judgment either way. Simply that they’re not the elected representatives, and their undue influence over the masses is ANYTHING but democratic, but that is a whole different debate, and a topic for another time. Perhaps even a good topic for discussion on our own political forums, which you are cordially invited to join!
